Name: Doug Gray
Title: General Manager
Location: Fergus Falls, MN
Background: I began my career right out of college at KQWB AM/FM as an account executive. That was in 1987, in 1991 I was promoted to sales manager and then in 1996 when the company was sold, I accepted a position with KFGO in Fargo, eventually becoming a sales manager/trainer for the group. My final radio gig in Fargo was as sales manager for WDAY FM / KQWB FM before accepting the general manager position in Fergus Falls in 1998.
Concordia College (Moorhead, MN) B.A. in Mass Communications / Minor in Business Administration. Certified Radio/Media Consultant (RAB). Extensive sales training through Jason Jennings, Jim Williams, Dave Gifford, Sean Luce, Chuck Mefford, Jim Lakoduk and hundreds of local business owners through thousands of face to face sales presentations.
How you got into broadcasting: My college roommate was an announcer at KQWB-FM and he informed me that they were hiring advertising salespeople. I still think of it as my most persistent sales effort ever. I called and stopped in daily after my initial interview. I didn’t have a choice but to wear ‘em down, I had rent to pay!
Why you love your work: There are three reasons I love what I do. The first is I love working with people. I realize that is cliché, however I am uniquely motivated by discovering a business’ unique problem, opportunity or need and then working with the client to develop a campaign that helps them solver their problem, take advantage of their opportunity or fulfill their need. Secondly, I love to help develop a salesperson’s skill set. It is extremely rewarding to help others achieve success and become a radio sales professional. Third, I thrive on making a business work. Being able to see all the moving parts and insuring they all work together to achieve one common goal is very rewarding. Finally and perhaps most important of the things I love about the broadcasting industry is the connection to the community. We are part of the fabric of the community. Radio is the original social media and it still is the glue that keeps a community connected. Small market radio, like no other media, allows us the opportunity to influence our community for the better.
Random Facts: I am the father of two sons, Taylor, 22 and Quinten, 17. Taylor is a graduate of Colorado Christian University and will be pursuing a Masters of Literature at St. Andrews in Edinburgh, Scotland. Quinten will be a junior at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy and as mentioned, 17 years old. So, he’s a lot smarter than his dad…
Martial Arts are my personal passion. After 20 years of study, I have achieved the rank of 5th Degree Black Belt Master Instructor in Taekwondo, 3rd Degree Black Belt in Hapkido and 1st Degree Black Belt in Kumdo, The Art of the Sword. Besides owning and operating my own martial arts gym, I have enjoyed the privilege of traveling to Korea on three occasions for training and certification.
